Sergio Zapirain
Sergio Zapirain began his music studies in Errenteria and Bayonne, and completed advanced cello and chamber music studies in San Sebastián under the tutelage of Román Jablonski. Regarding his instruction as a conductor, the training under the renowned conductors Maite Aurrekoetxea and iker Sánchez is remarkable.
He has been first cellist of the Zaragoza Symphony Orchestra and the Aita Donostia Chamber Orchestra conducted by Juanjo Mena. He has collaborated with the Basque Country Symphony Orchestra and Conductus Ensemble, and has also been a member of the Usandizaga, Viancello and Arriaga quartets. In 1994 he participated in the premiere of Sinfonía Mítica by Francisco Escudero. From 2000 to 2006, he directed the Errenteria Musikal Conservatory and continues to teach cello and orchestra at the same institution (Errenteriako Herri Arte Eskola).
As a conductor, he has led numerous choirs and ensembles. Today he is the director of the Otxote Karnaba and the Baroque Ensemble of San Sebastián since 2008. He has conducted notable works such as Mozart's Requiem and Handel's Messiah. He has also recorded music for films ("Loraldia", "La muerte del cura Sta. Cruz") and accompanied renowned Basque bertsolaris on ETB.
